Since Google Maps™ mapping service was first introduced in 2005, most of us have used it to find our way to a restaurant, venue or on vacation.  You can also use Google Maps for genealogy, as Mary will demonstrate in this presentation:

Millions of U.S. passenger arrival records are available online; even more are not yet indexed from ships' passenger manifests stored on microfilm at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration. How can you tell when your ancestor came to the North America? Searching ship's manifests and other historical records may provide you with clues about an ancestor's date and ship of arrival in the U.S. Major resources for finding U.S. (and some Canadian) immigration information will be discussed and listed in the class handout with links to online repositories and helpful online how-to reading materials.

• Comparing the Irish-Rich Databases - Most Irish genealogy databases are for-fee (FindMyPast, RootsIreland, JohnGrenham) and the major providers (Ancestry, FamilySearch) share much of the data. This session  focuses on the content and differences among the major providers. (September 2021)

Since images of the 1950 Census of Population and Housing were made available on April 1, 2022, volunteers have been indexing the records.  This session focuses how to use the National Archives and Records Administration's artificial intelligence-based index, online indexes, and how to track down family members you can't find in the indexes.

Learn the ins-and-outs of using FamilySearch.org, a family history website of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. As of 2018, the website has more than two billion digitized images, and access is free. Learn how to find and use the site's many databases and research tools. Follow along as the instructor does a sample search and ask questions that relate to your own family history research.
Instructor Mary Wickersham is a past director of the Minnesota Genealogical Society and past president of the Irish Genealogical Society International. She has more than 14 years' experience as a professional genealogist and lecturer with a background in software and websites.

At the beginning of your family tree? Get started gathering and organizing family info; then researching and filling in missing pieces. In these three sessions, we'll cover gathering and recording family history information; identifying missing pieces; and researching online and in-person.

Get hands-on help with your research using online databases. Bring your “brick wall” or other family mystery information with you and get help solving your pesky family history puzzles. Genealogy 101 participation helpful, but is not a pre-requisite.  Bring your laptop or use a computer at the Community Center.
